#ICYMI @SubstackInc’s biggest problem may be the fact it’s proved it’s possible for people in the boardroom to make big money off of newsletters. Now @Facebook and @Twitter are getting into the game, and they have a lot more 👀 and 💰. https://t.co/OVDHJQs50o via @KQEDNews https://t.co/RwnCmhxE67

@AaronLoooo Monthly media costs are down to a couple streaming/gaming services and icloud storage. I've been thinking about subscribing to a couple people on Substack, but that's it.
I'm regularly shocked by the number of average Joes who pay monthly subs to m***ive media outlets

The amount of leftists on here that fall for cult ****, right down to forking over money for substacks and patreons and considering it praxis, is staggering and pathetic

@authorjesspayne I’d imagine lots of people would have the same issue so hopefully you can sort it out. Substack is kind of a newsletter/subscription service/blog all in one. It‘s interesting and might be worth checking out depending on what you’re after.

I’m on Substack, not your average “writer” can’t paywall my content because I don’t have access to Stripe
as a “hack” opted for https://t.co/55jn7jAOsi, it’s included in every issue as an OPTION to support monthly
not EXPONENTIAL growth but it’s self sustaining, THANK YOU🙏🏽❤️ https://t.co/LOvZqa46AH

@Dan_From_Reddit @I_C_Muller @ezraklein this is just wrong and its dependent on news vs opinion. i think the issue is we dont clearly label opinion vs reporting and it should be done that way. substack has NO oversight and its a blog post.

"'The Substack problem' is... a problem with media writ large. It's a problem with a world that systematically marginalizes trans voices unless they tell cis people what they want to hear. In that world, the 'trans question' is always a question about cis comfort."

The biggest social networks are broken:
1. You build the audience.
2. Then you find a way how to measure & monetise it (usually with external tools).
Platforms like substack win because you can build, measure and sell from the day one.
Which way would you prefer?

@davidmackau The problem is that a lot of newsrooms have a handful of actively harmful writers, most of whom make more than the many good writers. Of course Substack decided to do the same thing.
I support local news outlets and a few patreons, and that's all I've got bandwidth for.

I should start a substack where I turn every little thing that irritates me into a huge thing about society's downfall, but from the left. Dude in a suit slows down a line at the grocery store? "The cl*** divide is making the 'educated' more incompetent—and society will suffer."

@MeghnaWBUR @TheBrockJohnson Well the area where substackers and NPR affiliates overlap is pretty significant actually. Individual writers and non profits are much more concerned with sustainability rather than growth. Problem for substackers will be when substack goes down for same reason a newspapers.

Is Blogging Dead?
No - it is just taking new forms:
- Vlogging
- Newsletters are back, just look at Substack
- Micro blogging on Instagram is easier to digest
Just need to be more creative: infographics, break down long form and repurposed across multiple channels

The big problem with Substack?
Many writers will realize that most people won't pay for their work.
At first, they'll blame the customer.
The smart writers will eventually blame themselves.
And that's when they'll be able to succeed.
Watch.

@geniecoefficnt The adtech duopoly of Google and Facebook is certainly an issue.
I was pointing out the efforts by NYT, CNN, Youtube, etc. at quashing any independent journalists who are trying to make it on their own using substack or other methods.
