Is Starlink down right now?
(latest update January 23, 2021)

Reported 2021-01-23 12:04:34
Does anyone know if Starlink’s satellites are actually more reflective than a normal smallsat/cubesat?
I suppose the real issue for astronomers is the pure quantity of Starlink sats, 12,000 aimed with potentially 42,000 in total.

Jonathan O’Callaghan @Astro_Jonny
Reported 2021-01-23 11:26:02
@Vulcan2k3 @Hughes_Matt @simon_sat Yep, and I can totally see the appeal at the moment. I don't think Starlink can match fibre on speed though, so might only be a short term fix if fibre is eventually more widely spread.

Jonathan O’Callaghan @Astro_Jonny
Reported 2021-01-23 10:53:30
@Vulcan2k3 @Hughes_Matt @simon_sat They shouldn't have to rely on Starlink though. Rural access to internet is a problem the government should solve, and it is attempting to do so in the US with the RDOF fund. Admittedly Starlink is one of the competitors, but fibre is arguably a better option.

@Emadipi_ I'm not arguing about if the problem is real or not, because it very clearly is. But how the narrative was influenced by the correlation between Musk and Starlink.

Maximilian Klinger @maximiliklinger
Reported 2021-01-23 10:26:23
@Emadipi_ Sorry, but this approach does not add anything to the discussion. There are a TON of issues with Starlink (not only for astronomers) and I wholeheartedly agree it's very important issue, however this kind of approach is not productive.

Maximilian Klinger @maximiliklinger
Reported 2021-01-23 10:15:33
@Emadipi_ I think The Orbit didn't imply that the issue isn't real for astronomers; but that a good chunk of Starlink criticism is due to its connection to Musk, which is himself a controversial figure even outside SpaceX.

@StarlinkProject @bitactro @SpaceX How Starlink will work?
It is a SpaceX project which is a so-called mega constellation of thousands of satellites that will be orbiting very close to the earth 550km at some fix different orbiting s****s. Each satellite is beaming internet coverage to the surface below... Read

It looks like there's no acoustic padding in the fairing either. I think that's a fit issue with the #Starlink satellites.
The will have to jettison the payload adapter above them like I thought as well.

@Professor2234 @bernardtheplant @elonmusk But starlink sattelites are much lower in orbit then traditional satelites. Starlink satelites will deorbit in 5 years. Traditional wont.

An impact ****ysis found that South Africa’s SKA telescope will be severely affected by Elon Musk’s Starlink satellites. The issue lies in the fact that both the satellites and telescope operate in the same spectrum. https://t.co/CRajLchD2M https://t.co/VTFU6xUSed

They deorbit in 5 years. If they explode they deorbit in 5 years. If they coldie they deorbit in 5 years. If they just stop working they deorbit in 5 years.
Starlink isnt the problem.

It's sad to hear #Alphabet is ending the Loon project. I hope @elonmusk 's #Starlink comes to the rescue, making the ISP providers in Nigeria to seat up or go out of business.

@elonmusk @elonmusk Google is shutting down their balloon(Loon) internet project here in Kenya barely a year since it launched. Do you think Starlink made the 🎈 project obsolete? And when can we expect the service here in Africa?

Rev. Olav Folland (olavf) @OlavFolland
Reported 2021-01-23 00:49:19
TBH I'm not surprised. My read on the deets is the loons are basically a LTE go-between for satellite comms and with LEO constellations (Starlink, OneWeb, etc) coming online they won't be able to compete.

How does the StarLink Project tackle the issue of a potential m*** collision of the satellites followed by the chain reaction of hitting further 3rd party satellites and thereby potentially preventing any further spaceflights?

Elon Musk's SpaceX just launched Falcon 9 wc carries the Starlink satellite w/ an effort to launch thousands of small sats, all of wc will be in low Earth orbit, the goal is to be able to transmit fast internet signals down to Earth.

@D***kelett @nextspaceflight I was just thinking Starlink sats - if you can get 60 on an F9, how many can Starship carry - 240+? As to cube sats, imagine a swarm for some sort of scientific measurement - maybe a thousand or more (could be built on a production line hence bringing down per-unit costs a lot).
